Insecure is returning for one last time. The HBO comedy's fifth season premiering tonight, and fans are celebrating the return of new episodes after 16 months. However, the premiere is also bittersweet, as HBO and creator Issa Rae announced last January that Season 5, or Season Bye-ve, will be the show's last.

"Very excited to film our fifth and final season! We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y'all soon!" Rae wrote, with Twitter quickly responding in uproar and tears at the loss of one of its favorite shows.

Though the announcement shocked fans, the Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl creator also Deadline that she and executive producer Prentice Penny always planned to end the show after five seasons. "I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least," she said.

Rae also reflects on the show's final season and the end of this chapter of her life and career in an interview with Bazaar.com, revealing that she's "definitely been ready to say goodbye."

"I've given so much of myself, and I know that I don't want to be in another television show that I've created, just because it's so daunting, and it takes so much of your time. I am just kind of trying to figure out balancing the business side and being behind the scenes with how much I actually want to be in front of the camera. I'm figuring that out, and I feel like I'm at another terrifying crossroads of what's next," she says.

She also says that she's ready to move on to her new projects after working on a show that takes inspiration from "a specific story and a specific time in my life."

She says, "Obviously, the show could grow and the characters can get older, but it just feels like a specific part of my life that I feel like is done. The entire reasoning behind Insecure is to show that this journey to these characters becoming secure in themselves and becoming comfortable being uncomfortable. So, in that way, I'm ready to move on to the next story, but I don't know what part of myself I'm giving for the next project. Maybe that'll come years from now. Who knows, but I definitely don't have it now."

Lucky for us, Rae is already working behind the scenes on several projects, after finalizing an eight-figure production deal between her Hoorae media company and WarnerMedia last March. Her upcoming HBO Max show Rap Sh*t, about two estranged high school friends who reunite to form a rap group, is currently filming in Miami.
