Why Kate Middleton's BAFTAs Gown Might Look Familiar

Kate Middleton has an enviable wardrobe, to say the very least (Alexander McQueen! Coats for every mood! TIARAS!). And, perhaps due to the breadth of said wardrobe, the Duchess of Cambridge does her fair share of outfit-repeating.

Middleton’s next re-wear might just take place on the red carpet. The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge are planning to attend the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards (BATFAs) on Feb. 2, and according to the London College of Fashion, guests are encouraged to “dress sustainably” this year.

The application of this dress code could of course result in a re-wear, but it could also apply to renting clothing, shopping vintage, or wearing something from a sustainable designer.

The London College of Fashion shared a list of designers they encourage guests to consider when choosing an outfit, including Stella McCartney, Mara Hoffman, and Reformation. Middleton, like sister-in-law Meghan Markle, is known to wear McCartney on occasion, so the British designer could definitely be a BAFTAs contender.

However, there is a caveat here … Middleton doesn’t always do as she’s told (at least when it comes to the BAFTAs’ red carpet). In 2018, guests were asked to wear black to stand with the Time’s Up movement; Middleton (holding to royal protocol) wore a forest green Jenny Packham gown with a slim black sash.

The BAFTAs isn’t the only 2020 awards show to encourage sustainability. The Golden Globes made history earlier this month when guests were served a fully plant-based meal.
