When the Louisville football team begins fall camp Wednesday, it will do so without the highest-rated wide receiver prospect to sign with the Cardinals' 2022 recruiting class.

Four-star wideout Devaughn Mortimer has not yet enrolled at U of L, head coach Scott Satterfield confirmed Tuesday during the Cards' media day. On Feb. 9, the 18-year-old was arrested on a felony battery charge in his native Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to documents obtained by the Courier Journal.

Satterfield said Mortimer's status "(is) still unknown at this point" and the team "should get maybe some clarity over the next couple of weeks." According to court documents, the wide receiver was sentenced to a year of probation on June 10 but may transfer that probation to Kentucky. He is not eligible for early termination.

Mortimer's arrest citation alleges he elbowed a female in the face on Feb. 8 while they were sitting in a car at Dillard High School, where he starred on both the Panthers' football and track and field teams. The blow allegedly caused "a laceration to her bottom lip that required several stiches to close" and broke two of the girl's front teeth.

Mortimer and the victim had been dating for approximately nine months when the alleged incident occurred, according to his arrest citation. In later court documents, the female is identified as a minor.

Mortimer plead not guilty to the felony battery charge in March, but court documents show he amended that plea to no contest on June 10. His probation began July 9 and requires him to complete a 13-week anger management course and 100 hours of community service.

Mortimer, who originally committed to Florida State, surprised many on national signing day in December when he put on a Louisville hat and announced his plans to play for the Cardinals.

Explaining his decision to Marcus Benjamin of Rivals.com, the wide receiver said the Seminoles "didn't really too much show me the type of offensive scheme that I fit into." As for U of L, Mortimer said Satterfield and company "can help me get better as not just an athlete but a better young man."

After completing his final season on the gridiron for Dillard last fall, Mortimer was the No. 51 wide receiver prospect and No. 336 overall talent in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. The wide receiver's signing day profile on U of L Athletics' official website says he caught 24 passes for 318 yards and five touchdowns during the Panthers' 2021 season, which ended after six games because the team opted out of the Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Mortimer was just one of four wide receivers to sign with Louisville's 2022 recruiting class. The others, three-star prospects Chris Bell, Chance Morrow and Maurice Turner, have enrolled at the university and will be participating in fall camp. The Cardinals also added two wideouts through the transfer portal this offseason — Tyler Hudson, formerly of Central Arkansas, and ex-Miami Hurricane Dee Wiggins — after losing Jordan Watkins to Ole Miss and Tyler Harrell to Alabama.

Returning members of the receiving corps include: Braden Smith; Ahmari Huggins-Bruce; Josh Johnson; Bradley West; Jatavian Churchill; Christian Henry; Elijah Downing and Jaelin Carter.

"It's going to be different at wide receiver this year, but I do think that it's a great mix of guys," Satterfield said Tuesday. "We have speed; we have size; we have guys that can catch across the middle; we have guys that can knock the top off."
