Why a Marlborough woman is charged with manslaughter in city's 2nd homicide of the summer

MARLBOROUGH — A Marlborough woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a Marlborough man on Aug. 2.

Darlene Carreras, 37, of Marlborough, is charged with manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of Eric Murray, 45, of Marlborough, according to a joint statement from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Marlborough Chief of Police David Giorgi released on Aug. 7.

Carreras was arrested in Worcester on Saturday, Aug. 5, and arraigned in Marlborough District Court on Aug. 7. She was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Aug. 23.

At approximately 10:32 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, Marlborough police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor on Saint Ives Way in the Stone Gate apartment complex, saying that they heard a cry for help coming from another apartment. When police arrived, they found Murray suffering from stab wounds.

Murray was transported UMass Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Carreras was also located inside the home, with cuts on her hand. She was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries.

A preliminary investigation into the incident suggests that Carreras and Murray had been involved in a relationship, according to the press release. The report said, on Aug. 2, Murray went to Carreras' home where they got into an altercation, which culminated in Carreras' allegedly stabbing Murray in the chest with a knife. Police said that Carreras allegedly attempted to apply pressure to the wound, but did not call 911 and instead called a friend to come over for help.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the manner of death was homicide, caused by stab wounds to the chest.

The investigation into the Aug. 2 stabbing is open and ongoing. It is being conducted by the District Attorney's Office and Marlborough police.

The incident is the second murder in Marlborough in a little more than two months, following an incident on June 1 when police arrested Daniel Uhlman, 53, after he allegedly killed his mother, Nancy Uhlman, 82, in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn on Lakeside Avenue.

He remains held without bail undergoing competency and criminal responsibility evaluations at Bridgewater State Hospital.
