Why old building can't be saved, Rumpke trucks, today's top stories | Daily Briefing
Hey, Cincinnati. Did you know that downtown's Central Parkway hides an incomplete subway system underneath it? I think you probably did. Did you also know that before the failed construction of the city's would-have-been underground rail, the length of Central Parkway was full of water?
I'm Sydney Franklin, The Enquirer's real estate reporter. For decades, the Miami and Erie Canal split the now border of Over-the-Rhine and the West End before being drained. Countless buildings rose around it to accommodate trade.
Today, under two dozen of those buildings remain, and one in particular – located across from TQL Stadium – crumbled to the ground in late April. In its place, a Columbus-based developer wants to build a $25 million boutique hotel. They argued, in a years-long legal battle, that the only way to do that was to demolish the canal-era structure.
Was the 169-year-old building really irreparable?
Locals didn't think so, and they fought right until the end to keep it intact. Find out how this near-two-year saga unfolded in my latest article about how one of Cincinnati's oldest buildings couldn't be saved.
