Here’s why an onion-flavored snack has been recalled from dollar stores in 17 states

“Onion Flavored Rings” got recalled from Dollar Tree stores in 17 states Wednesday after a packaging boo-boo that can have severe consequences for those with food allergies or sensitivities.

This doesn’t concern Frito Lay’s long popular Funyuns, but certain packs of Rudolph Foods’ Funyuns knockoff, OnYums. What’s inside those packs of OnYums might have wheat as well as monosodium glutamate and artificial food colors yellow 6, yellow 6 lake, blue 2 lake, blue 1 lake, and red 40 lake.

Rudolph got notified that what’s inside might be one or a few Chile & Limon flavored puffed wheat chips, which have different ingredients than OnYums. So the wheat, glutamate and artificial food colors aren’t listed among the ingredients.

Undeclared allergens are dangerous. As the FDA-posted recall notice states: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

This covers OnYums in 3-ounce packs, UPC No. 0-24622-57106-9 and code date AUG 3, 2023, with time stamps 02:00 – 04:30. They went to Dollar Trees in Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

If you have these OnYums and there’s no chance someone with a wheat allergy or who can’t take artificial food coloring will eat them, keep munching. Otherwise, return them to the store for a full refund or at least throw them in the garbage.

If you have questions, call Rudolph Foods’ April Pearson at 214-566-0050, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern time or email her at apearson@RudolphFoods.com.
