There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder, “Do they really work?” In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Adaptive Sound Technologies Lectrofan Micro2 Sleep Sound Machine

Tester: Brandon Carte, gadget-obsessed frequent traveler who likes getting his 8 hours of sleep.

The Brief: This portable white-noise machine will help you, your partner, or your child fall asleep and stay asleep. Plus, it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker!

Getting a good night's sleep used to be nearly impossible for me. I once lived in a first-floor apartment below what I think was a troupe of tap dancers, and to make matters worse, the roommate who I shared a wall with was a night owl with the worst taste in music. To this day, I wish I could purge the dubstep version of the Dixie Chicks' 2002 hit single “Travelin’ Soldier” completely from my brain.

Luckily, I was able to find a way to mask all of the commotion, and it was by getting the original LectroFan white-noise machine. It was exactly what I needed to tune out the distractions, and shortly after getting it, I was falling asleep in less than 20 minutes. I must love the sound of white noise a little too much, because now I can’t fall asleep without it, especially when I travel.

Thankfully, a smaller, cheaper, and more portable LectroFan model exists — it's called the LectroFan Micro2 White-Noise Machine, and it’s honestly one of my favorite gadgets.

Compared to the cereal-bowl-sized original, the LectroFan Micro2 is smaller than a billiards ball. It offers 11 built-in sounds: five digital fan options, four variations of white, pink, and brown noise, plus two ocean sounds.

Besides its portability, I also love that the LectroFan Micro2 White-Noise Machine can also double as a Bluetooth speaker. It’s the perfect hotel companion, since you can jam out to music while getting ready. It'll pair to your smartphone in just seconds and streams music from apps like Spotify or YouTube. To fall asleep, I’ve even streamed ASMR and rain sounds.

I was shocked that a speaker this small could get loud enough to tune out distracting noises. Granted, it’s lacking in the bass department — but overall, the audio quality is quite good. I like that it has a swivel design for pointing the speaker in any direction with just a simple twist.

The rechargeable battery of the LectroFan Micro2 can last up to 40 hours playing sleep sounds, or up to 20 hours playing Bluetooth audio at a modest volume. That's not bad for a device that's only 2 inches tall!

Closing Argument: To me, you just can’t put a price on a good night’s rest. The Lectrofan Micro2 costs well under $40 — and I’d much rather spend the money instead of what seems like an eternity tossing and turning trying to get to sleep.
