Why people are being advised to avoid visiting Bali in 2020

If Bali is on your bucket list for 2020, you might want to have a rethink. According to a new report, people are actually being advised to give the Indonesian island a miss next year, in order to give the wildlife and nature a chance to recuperate.

In its annual 'No List', Fodor's Travel listed Bali as a suggestion of a place to avoid visiting any time soon. The aim of the round up hopes to highlight places and issues that travellers might be grappling with, and explain what they can do about it.

"Bali, Indonesia’s most-visited island, has suffered the effects of overtourism in the last few years to the point that the government is weighing a tourist tax to help combat some of the more sinister effects on the environment," the report begins.

In 2017, the government declared a "garbage emergency" due to the amount of plastic on beaches and waters, while single-use plastic was banned on the island altogether in December 2018. Unsurprisingly, it's hard to ignore the litter when you're in Bali - and the impact it's having on the environment could become hard to reverse.

Environmental impacts aside, the report also noted how "authorities are now working to enact guidelines mandating respectful behaviour from tourists who are visiting religious sites in bathing suits, climbing over sacred sites, and generally disrespecting customs and cultural norms."

So if you do hope to head to Bali in 2020, make sure you take your reusable water bottle, clean up your left overs, and dress appropriately for the culture.
