Why lanes are closed on the Bourne Bridge Thursday

Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct that it is the Bourne Bridge that will have lane closures on Thursday.

BOURNE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close lanes on the Bourne Bridge Thursday so workers can "conduct emergency pavement repairs."

This is the second day in a row the federal agency has restricted canal bridge travel to one lane in each direction. On Wednesday lanes were closed on the Sagamore Bridge for maintenance work.

The lane closures are expected to be in place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. No wide loads are allowed to cross the bridge during that time.

This week's lane closures may provide an early peek into traffic conditions later this spring, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begins a three-month maintenance project on the Sagamore Bridge.

Labeled "critical maintenance work," the longer-term project, set to kick off March 1, will target repairs to the road surface, bridge joints, concrete abutment structures, bridge lighting, drainage systems and deteriorated steel supports.

Traffic will be reduced to one, 12-foot-wide lane in each direction, 24 hours per day. The work and travel restrictions are likely to remain in place through May, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, though this project is also weather-dependent.

Travel delays are likely during morning and evening commutes. Police details will be on site when work is being performed to assist with traffic, according to the Army Corps' statement.
