Why is SNL alum screaming for ice cream on South Jersey beach?

Why is an SNL alum making waves on your FYP?

Cheri Oteri, the diminutive funnywoman who made Gen X teens and 20s roar with laughter every Saturday night in the late 90s, has spent the summer enjoying the Jersey Shore life with self-deprecation and silliness in a series of TikTok videos.

Originally from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Oteri was a cast member of “Saturday Night Live” from 1995 through 2000. And like any reasonable person from the ‘burbs, the 60-year-old has a fondness for South Jersey’s beaches.

Her TikTok videos have collected hundreds of thousands of views.

In a clip posted Sept. 1, she asked a popular Longport restaurant to have a “strong, young guy” carry her from her car into the dining room.

Steve and Cookies’ staff obliged. Her video, with 152,000 page views, shows two men basket-carrying the comedienne into a packed lobby.

Oteri’s TikTok also pokes fun at the infamously long wait list to dine at Steve and Cookies, with her telling a hostess she booked the dinner in 2020. That was a callback to a TikTok from June in which she learned there were no reservations available and then suggested she might find a table if another diner had a heart attack.

But Oteri’s zings at summer beach life aren’t restrained to the Downbeach towns.

On Monday, she pedaled a boat to a Hammonton-based oral surgeon’s lakefront home and screamed out a request for an appointment.

But in a wild, now-viral, 24-second TikTok from Sept. 2, Oteri’s on the beach in Sea Isle City when she spots the Fudgy Wudgy man hawking ice cream from a push cart.

Nearly 2 million people have watched as Oteri lets out an ear-piercing “FUDGY WUDGY!” worthy of a late-night sketch bit. A few days later, she reunites with the shirtless ice cream dude and tells him how the Fudgy Wudgy men of her youth were much different.
