Why these tables were empty at Chick-fil-As around the country this weekend

At many Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country, one seat was empty over the weekend.

To honor soldiers who died while serving in the Armed Forces, the fast food chain set up "Missing Man Tables" at many locations for Memorial Day weekend.

Missing Man Tables are memorials set up in military dining facilities to honor dead, missing or imprisoned service members and are full of symbolic items and colors.

"This table is reserved to honor our missing comrades in arms," a framed statement that accompanied Chick-fil-A's tables read.

According to the National League of POW/MIA Families, here's what on the items on the tables represent:

  • The table is round: To show our everlasting concern.

  • The cloth is white: Symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve.

  • The single red rose: Reminds us of the lives of these Americans and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, while seeking answers.

  • The yellow ribbon: Symbolizes our continued uncertainty, hope for their return and determination to account for them.

  • A slice of lemon: Reminds us of their bitter fate, captured or missing in a foreign land.

  • A pinch of salt: Symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families.

  • The lighted candle: Reflects our hope for their return.

  • The Bible: Represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

  • The glass is inverted: To symbolize their inability to share a toast.

  • The chairs are empty: They are missing.

Here's a look at some of the Missing Man Tables from Chick-fil-A locations around the country:
