Why Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Skipped the 2021 Met Gala

Neither Taylor Swift nor her boyfriend Joe Alwyn made it to the Met Gala tonight. Swift's absence isn't too surprising, as the singer wasn't at the MTV VMAs last night either despite her multiple nominations.
Swift was photographed on Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Thursday, where Alwyn has been filming Conversations With Friends. Her decision not to rush back to New York and attend the Met Gala is understandable, especially given the travel, ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and restrictions from it. Swift instead posted on her TikTok today, reflecting on how excited she is to perform live again soon.
Swift last attended the Met Gala in 2016. She referenced the Met Gala in her reputation song “Dress” and alluded to meeting Alwyn, her partner of four years, there. “Flashback when you met me / Your buzzcut and my hair bleached / Even in my worst times, you could see the best of me.” The summer of 2016 was when Kim Kardashian posted her Snapchats of Swift and Kanye West's phone call; Swift's hair was bleach blonde for the event, while Alwyn had a buzz cut.
Swift has made a point to keep her and Alwyn's relationship as private as possible. In August 2019, she explained her decision to The Guardian. “I’ve learned that if I do [talk in interviews about my relationship with Alwyn], people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion,” she said. “If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it–but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”
