Why Star and Jose homeschool

Homeschooling was the fastest way Star and Jose said they could protect their family of five kids.

Their eldest son got a death threat because he wore a University of Nebraska football jersey to school. It was a shock. College football rivalries were one thing, but the verbal threat shook the family. At that point, it was time to pull all the children out of the Texas school system altogether, Star said.

The family was already familiar with homeschooling. A younger son, Joseph, was learning at home after an altercation with school authorities. A teacher had forcibly pushed Joseph into a chair against his will, Star said.

Joseph has Asperger's syndrome, and while he earns high grades and tests in the 99th percentile, he sometimes acts out behaviorally, Star said. Joseph and a teacher had an escalating confrontation that culminated with the child's face on the carpet of the principal's office, Jose says.

In spite of challenges like keeping Star's scholarship to law school and the family afloat, Star and Jose say there are no regrets. The parents read harsh criticisms when they were first introduced in Remake America, but they say keeping the family safe and together was worth the Internet criticism they endured.
