Why A Woman Says She Doesn’t Want Teachers Talking To Her Kids About Gender Pronouns

In the United States and elsewhere, there is a debate over how some transgender individuals, and those who identify as gender-fluid or nonbinary, are electing to use personal pronouns. Using inclusive language and pronouns and discussing gender pronouns in schools has become a major part of the debate, especially when parents and administrators don’t always agree. Staci (she/her), a mother of two, says she pulled her kids out of their local school district after learning some teachers were asking students about their preferred personal pronouns. “I don’t want a teacher talking to my children about gender pronouns,” she says. “It’s inappropriate. It’s crossing a line.” Matt (he/him), who has children in the same district, says he became uncomfortable when his 8-year-old was given an assignment that he claims forced him into what he felt was a premature discussion about gender presentation. “I’ve decided not to pull my children out of the school district, but I’m fighting for change,” he says. What do Matt and Staci say they’re doing to effect change in their school district?
