We live in a world that relies on technology. There isn't a day that goes by where we’re not attached to our phones, scrolling through Facebook or watching funny videos on Youtube.

A ‘Digital Detox’ is where you spend a certain amount of time away from using anything electronic; your laptop, phone, anything around you really.

The time that you have out from using these devices can help reduce stress, give you time to take time for yourself and take part in other activities that stimulate the brain.

Here are some tips on how you can detoxify yourself:

Go back to your childhood

Remember the times when there was no screen to stare at for hours on end? Well, go back to that time. Try and remember the things you would do as a child and do them instead.

A firm favoruite in our household was board games, anything that meant winning was spot on.

Go out and have some fun

If staying indoors is killing you, then why not go out with your friends. Keep the phone at distance and just talk face to face. You’ll learn more about one another this way then on social media.

The dinner table or club isn’t for phones, leave them behind and enjoy yourself. Plus, if you don’t have something to take photos on, you won’t regret it all the morning after!

Read and weep your heart away

There is something about reading an actual book that is like no other. Opening it and smelling the pages along with getting through the pages as quick as you can is just magical.

Find a book that you have wanted to read for a while and get going. Read until your eyes can no longer function, it will give you some time away from the digital world and relax you all at the same time.

E-books don’t count as reading, they are still on a device. If reading isn’t your thing, then why not try colouring? It is just as relaxing and you have a pretty picture at the end.

Go on an adventure

When was the last time you acted like a tourist in your own town/city? Never? You, me both. Take time out during your detox to explore the world around, don’t go to your usual places, venture somewhere new and exciting.

Try the food from the van on the side of the road, go shopping in the vintage shop and sleep on the grass in the park full of noisy children. Going out and about will kill time much quicker and let you see the world from a different angle.

Our lives are so busy and full of work, we never get time to sit back and watch the world go by. This is the time to do it.

Express yourself

Let’s faced it 140 characters just aren’t enough to talk about your feelings. Why not invest in a journal or little notebook to write down everything inside of you. Talk about the best things in your life, your goals for the next year or even how you see yourself.

Now you don’t want to be having a detox all the time, just every so often so that your head has a chance to clear itself up. At the end of the day, its all about having a balance.

If you will excuse me, I’m off to have a detox…
