MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Today (2/13/24) State Senate Republicans passed Democratic Governor Tony Evers’ maps. The Legislative Redistricting Bill passed 18 to 14, with one Democrat voting with the majority of Republicans for the bill and five Republicans joined most of the Democrats against the bill. The Assembly also passed the maps today (2/13/24), sending them to Governor Evers.

This marks the second time in less than a month that the Legislature has tried to enact new Senate and Assembly boundaries before the court issues its order drawing the lines. Republican Representative, and Assembly Speaker, Robin Voss, explains, “If the governor signs the map, I am supremely confident that is the map we’ll run on November whether we like or not that’s what we’re gonna do.”

Meanwhile, some State Senators say these new maps are still not representative or that the courts should decide instead.  In session, Democratic Senator Jeff Smith said, “The will of the people does not want legislators to protect majorities, to protect seats, to protect their positions.”

Governor Tony Evers previously said he will sign the maps if they are passed without changes.
