Wichita film festival will feature an appearance by ‘Reservation Dogs’ cast member

Local filmmaker (and regular Wichita Eagle contributor) Rodrick Pocowatchit has organized a second outing of his AlterNative Film Festival — which he first launched in the fall of 2021 — and it happens this weekend.
The festival, which features all Indigenous films, even will get a visit from a celebrity. Nathalie Standingcloud, a tattoo artist who also is a cast member on the hit FX on Hulu series “Reservation Dogs,” will be in attendance for a reception at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Her appearance will happen just before a special screening of two episodes of the series, scheduled for 7 p.m., and she’ll stay for a question-and-after session after. Standingcloud is Cherokee.
The film festival will happen from Friday through Sunday at the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, 650 N. Seneca, and admission to all events is free.
Wichita’s AlterNative Film Festival to showcase all-indigenous films for second edition
The festival will feature films from all over the United States and Canada, and some of the films have screened at respected film festivals such as Sundance and Toronto.
The opening night film, set for 7 p.m. on Friday, is “Beans,” directed by Mohawk-Canadian filmmaker Tracey Deer. It’s a coming-of-age story about the 1990 Oka Crisis at Kanesatake, which Deer lived through as a child.

Parking is available at Exploration Place, and attendees should enter the museum through the gates by the Keeper of the Plains.
