Wichita funeral home to close next month

After not quite two decades in business, Biglow Funeral Directors of Wichita at 2310 E. Lincoln is closing next month.

“We’ve really enjoyed . . . working with the public here,” said general manager Vincent Phillips.

He said he’s always believed in taking care of families.

“We never turn anybody away.”

Oklahoma-based Keith Biglow is keeping four funeral homes there. Phillips, 63, made the decision to close the Wichita home.

“I’ve got to be with my family.”

He said Biglow didn’t want to sell to someone else.

“I am the face of the place pretty much,” Phillips said. “We just kind of want to quietly go.”

The funeral home will honor all funerals through June 1.

Phillips said anyone who has paid for a pre-arranged plan can transfer it.

Phillips said he’s not sure what the funeral home’s closure means for the community.

“I know that we do things a little different; that’s all I can say,” he said. “I don’t think anybody else is going to do it the way we do it.”

Phillips said he understands people’s wants and needs.

“There’s a lot of people who need someone who understands what they’re actually going through. They just need someone to take their time and listen to them.”

Phillips said Wichita is a special place.

“I would hope and pray that those that are in our industry here in Wichita will . . . continue to take care of these families in this town.”
