Wichita high school basketball game scores: Dameron leads Eisenhower girls to Andover win

When the Goddard Eisenhower girls basketball team needs a bucket, Carly Dameron has been there to deliver.

The 6-foot-2 junior has been a mismatch problem inside for opponents all season and Andover, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 5A, became the latest victim when Dameron scored 23 points in a 49-46 upset victory for unranked Eisenhower on its home court on Tuesday.

It was a stunning reversal from how the matchup’s first game played out, a 20-point victory by the Trojans on Dec. 16. Eisenhower (9-4) snapped a 9-game winning streak for an Andover (11-2) team playing for the first time in 10 days since its dramatic win over Liberal to capture the Salina Invitational Tournament championship.

Tuesday’s game appeared to be headed in the same direction as the first matchup, as Eisenhower had to call a timeout after Andover built a 10-1 lead. But the Tigers steadily chipped away, cutting the deficit to 24-18 by halftime, then making their move in the third quarter.

A floater by senior Emilee Hollinger capped an 8-1 run to give Eisenhower its first lead of the game, 26-25. After Andover star Brooke Walker drilled a three to put Andover back in front, the Tigers responded with a 7-0 run featuring baskets from Sydney Crees, Dameron and Addison Verbeck for a 33-28 lead.

But any momentum was squelched by a 7-0 run by Andover in the final 70 seconds, as Alana Shetlar finished a 3-point play, Walker added a pair of free throws and Regan Dusenbery converted a layup for a 35-33 lead after a steal by Katie Evans to close the third quarter.

That’s when Dameron took over. Andover had no answer for her inside, as she scored twice in the opening minutes, including a smooth reverse layup, then a 7-0 run by Eisenhower was capped by another triple from Verbeck.

Andover would mount a comeback behind sophomore Amelya Vance, who scored back-to-back baskets to trim Eisenhower’s lead to 43-42. Eisenhower’s Catherine Eddy delivered a critical three to stretch the lead, but Vance answered with her third basket in a row to again bring Andover within striking distance, 46-44.

With the game on the line, Eisenhower funneled the ball inside to Dameron. Andover immediately sent a second defender her way, but the junior sensed the oncoming double team and spun away from the pressure to calmly bank in a crucial basket for a 48-44 lead.

Walker immediately answered with a jumper, then Andover’s full-court press forced a steal, but Walker’s potential game-tying jumper missed. After Dameron split a pair of free throws to extend Eisenhower’s lead to 49-46, Walker again had a potential game-tying shot but her 3-pointer from the top of the key was just long, hitting off the back iron.

Garden Plain girls basketball get even in Cheney rematch

After losing to Cheney for the second time this season just three days ago, the Garden Plain girls basketball team delivered its most inspired effort of the season with a 51-27 rout of the Cardinals on Tuesday.

The 24-point win by the unranked Owls (9-5) snapped an 11-game winning streak for Cheney (12-2), the No. 4-ranked team in Class 3A. Cheney won the first two games against Garden Plain by a combined 25 points, including a 45-31 victory this past Saturday in the Lady Wildcat Classic championship game in Haven.

Garden Plain out-scored Cheney 24-0 on 3-pointers, as Madelyn Rolfs (game-high 22 points) drilled four triples, Molly Zoglman (11 points) made three and Sydney Puetz (nine points) also hit one beyond the arc. The Owls led 28-17 at halftime and continued to stretch out its lead, out-scoring Cheney in all four quarters.

Cheney was led by 20 combined points from its one-two combination in the post in Campbell Hague and Leah Durr.
