Wichita high school basketball game scores: Southeast boys stun Carroll at the buzzer

The most improbable opening-night victory in the City League belonged to the Southeast boys basketball team, which erased a seven-point deficit in the final minute to stun Bishop Carroll 59-58 at the buzzer on Friday.

Southeast made three 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds, including one from the right corner by Preston Dinh with less than a second remaining, to pull off the come-from-behind victory on the home court of the No. 8-ranked team in Class 5A.

The fourth quarter had actually belonged to Carroll before the final minute, as the Golden Eagles had turned a four-point deficit into a 57-50 lead with 49 seconds left with an extended 15-4 run. A 3-pointer by Landon Steven put Carroll in front, then senior Mikey Brand extended the lead with free throws.

Southeast made its first 3-pointer of the rally to cut the deficit to 57-53 with 35 seconds, then following a timeout, Anthony Granger stole a pass out of Southeast’s full-court press and D.J. Brown immediately buried a 3-pointer to trim Carroll’s lead to 57-56 with 22 seconds left.

Carroll’s John Hauserman split a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to extend the lead to 58-56 and Southeast coach Karl Brown used two timeouts down the stretch to ensure his team got the right look.

As the final seconds waned, D.J. Brown began to attack the paint and drew a crowd of Carroll defenders. He calmly kicked out to Dinh, standing all alone in the right corner, and the Southeast bench erupted when the shot hit nothing but net as the clock expired.

Officials put 0.5 seconds back on the scoreboard, but Carroll’s full-court pass was picked off and Southeast emerged with a key City League victory to open the season.

Here are four other scores to know from the opening night of Kansas high school basketball season. Below a complete list of scores from games played on Friday, December 1 can be found for the Wichita area.

Second-quarter explosion leads Maize South girls to Andover Central win

Two of the top AV-CTL Division II girls basketball teams opened the season against one another, as Maize South scored an impressive 58-34 home win over Andover Central.

After a competitive first quarter, the Mavericks pulled away with a dominant second quarter where they outscored Andover Central 27-6 to open up a 24-point halftime advantage. The Jaguars, ranked No. 7 in Class 5A, never recovered, as Maize South, ranked No. 9 in Class 5A, improved to 1-0 this season.

Campus boys rally to upset defending state champion Andover

Behind a game-high 25 points from Drake signee Andrell Burton Jr., Campus pulled off a come-from-behind 71-61 home victory over Andover, the defending Class 5A state champions.

Andover held a narrow 50-47 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Campus duo of Burton and Kaason Thomas, who scored 24 points, powered the Colts to a dominant final eight minutes to outscore Andover 24-11 to pull away for the upset win.

Andover, which was ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, was led by three scorers in double-digits, which included Blake Rucker (21 points), Josh Kim (18) and Owen Allman (11).

Bishop Carroll girls hold on for Southeast win in City League showdown

A match-up between two of the top City League girls basketball teams opened the season, as Bishop Carroll came away with a 57-49 home win over Southeast.

Leah Henke, who scored a game-high 23 points, sparked a 13-2 run during the third quarter that saw Carroll push its lead to as many as 18 points.

Southeast managed to rally back to within 51-45 with 3:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Carroll’s Lilly Martin scored on a drive and the Golden Eagles, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, were never threatened again.

Southeast, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, was led by 22 points from Alana Webb, while Mikhiyah Jones scored 16.

Press leads Cheney girls to ranked win over Clearwater

In a battle of ranked girls basketball teams, Cheney prevailed 60-49 over Clearwater on its home court in the opening game of the season.

Thanks to a full-court press, Cheney was able to turn Clearwater over early and often to build a 25-6 lead following the first quarter. Clearwater, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, was able to claw back the final three quarters, but the strong start allowed Cheney, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, to hold on for the double-digit win.

Cheney will be led this season by Reagan Ayres, Karstyn Inslee, Reagan Black, Erika Block and Breanna Wells. Clearwater was led by a team-high 16 points from Elizabeth Tjaden.
