Wichita man sentenced to prison after toddler son dies of drug overdose

A 26-year-old Wichita man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison following the drug-related death of his 22-month-old son in June 2022.

Calvin Vick was sentenced to serve 219 months in prison after his son, Israel Luna-Vick, died from a fentanyl overdose, a Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office news release said on Tuesday.

Wichita police officers were called at around 10:30 p.m. to do a welfare check at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph on June 20, 2022, The Eagle previously reported.

The boy was taken to the hospital after he was found unresponsive on the floor of Vick’s apartment in the 8400 block of East Harry. Hospital staff performed life-saving measures and used Narcan, but the child died within an hour of arriving at the hospital, the DA’s office said.

Police investigators later searched Vick’s apartment and found four blue M30 pills on the floor of the bedroom where the boy was sleeping. The pills were tested and found to contain fentanyl.

Police initially ruled it an accidental death until the autopsy report came back.

“An autopsy at the Forensic Science Center showed the child died after ingesting methamphetamine and Fentanyl,” according to the release.

Vick was arrested nearly a year after the incident in May 2023. In December, he pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death and aggravated endangering of a child, the DA’s office said.

Israel Luna-Vick was a month shy of turning 2 when he died. A slideshow video on his obituary showed him being held by his parents, having his face painted as a tiger and attending events with his family.
