Summer workouts have begun this week at Koch Arena, but first-year Wichita State men’s basketball coach Paul Mills is still looking to finalize the final two spots on the roster for the upcoming season.

The Shockers could fill one of them with a recruiting splash, as they are in serious contention for North Carolina transfer D’Marco Dunn, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard with two years of eligibility who is a former top-100 prospect in the class of 2021.

Wichita State hosted Dunn on an official visit this past weekend, according to a source close to the program. Dunn also took an official visit to Penn State at the end of May, while Oklahoma and Utah are reportedly also trying to get in the mix.

Dunn would certainly fit the theme of Mills’ first recruiting class with the Shockers, which has targeted transfers who had limited roles at their previous stops and are expected to take on larger roles for WSU like Bijan Cortes (Oklahoma), Harlond Beverly (Miami) and Ronnie DeGray III (Missouri).

Dunn never had much of an opportunity with playing time in his two years at North Carolina, as he averaged 2.7 points in 10.2 minutes per game in his 27 appearances this past season with shooting percentages of 42.4% from the field and 32.4% on three-pointers. During the Tar Heels’ run to the national title game in the 2021-22 season, Dunn averaged 1.0 point in 4.1 minutes per game in 23 appearances.

Even with a limited sample size in college, Dunn appears to be an ideal candidate for a player who just needs an opportunity for playing time to thrive.

Dunn was a unanimous four-star prospect coming out of high school in 2021, ranked No. 64 nationally by Rivals and No. 68 on the 247Sports composite rankings.
