Wichita State holds off 9th-inning rally to defeat Oral Roberts

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita State University Shockers baseball team survived a bases-loaded threat in the ninth inning to take home the win over Oral Roberts on Wednesday afternoon, 3-1.

Starting pitcher Michael Mulhollon only lasted until the bottom of the second inning, walking five of the eight batters he faced.

Freshman Tyler Dobbs — who earned the win — came in for Mulhollon and threw five scoreless innings and only allowed one hit. He also struck out four batters in relief.

Offensively, the Shockers plated two runs in the second inning off a fielder’s choice and single and one more in the sixth coming from a passed ball. They would carry that lead all the way to the eighth inning, when a sacrifice fly to center field by ORU shortstop David Herring gave the Golden Eagles their only run of the game.

The game didn’t end easily, though. A single and a walk put two runners on for ORU before Caleb Anderson struck out a batter to put the Shockers within two outs of the win.

From there, Nate Adler took the mound out of the bullpen and allowed a bloop single to load the bases. He was able to induce a popout from ORU’s Alex Rodgers, and Camden Johnson would make a highlight reel-worthy play at third base to throw out ORU’s Elijah Rodriguez at first to seal the win.

The win moves the Shockers to 4-3 on the young season. Wichita State will kick off the home slate on Friday afternoon against Utah Tech. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
