Wichita wins big at state restaurant awards, can claim Restaurateur, Chef of the Year

Monday night marked the annual return of the Kansas Restaurant & Hospitality Association’s Stars of The Industry awards banquet, which gathers members of the state’s restaurant, bar and hotel industry at the Kansas Star Casino to eat, drink and watch each other win awards.

This year, Wichita swept many of the major award categories, including Restaurateur of the Year, Chef of the Year and Hot New Concept.

In most categories, restaurants had to be members of KRHA to win. One category — Hot New Concept — is open to nonmembers as well.

Below is a list of winners and nominees:

Tory DeMarce, co-owner of The Belmont in Wichita, was named the Restaurateur of the Year on Monday at the Kansas Restaurant & Hospitality Association Stars of the Industry awards banquet.

Since then, it’s become one of Wichita’s most buzzed about eateries, and Eftekhar is now working on a sister restaurant: He’s purchased the old Walt’s Klassics diner building that was previously at Kellogg and Tyler, moved it across the street from Station 8 and is turning it into a lunch restaurant focused on sandwiches.

Josh Rathbun, Lotte (opening later this month), 320 S. Market, Wichita

Over the years, he helped open and run many of the local Walt’s restaurants. In 1996, he opened a restaurant called Penguins at 7732 E. Central, eventually turning it into Walt’s Great American Sports Bar & Grill. That restaurant is now one of Wichita’s favorite east-side hangouts.
