'Wicked' tickets are on sale in Knoxville and already drawing lines. How to get them.

By 8 a.m. Monday, there was already a line outside the Tennessee Theatre for “Wicked” tickets.

But if you weren’t one of those early birds, no need to be green with envy. There are still tickets available for the immensely popular Broadway musical, which is coming to Knoxville Jan. 10-21.

“Wicked,” which has been called Broadway’s most popular musical, is based on the 1995 bestseller of the same name. It turns “The Wizard of Oz” on its head by making Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, the protagonist.

“So much happened before Dorothy dropped in,” the musical’s website proclaims. “There is a young woman, born with emerald-green skin – smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent – when she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular.”

“Wicked” premiered in October 2003 and this touring production is marking its 20th anniversary.

If you missed the early bird sale, here's how to get tickets to 'Wicked'

Tickets are on sale as of 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster. You can access the sale site by going to the theater website and clicking on the “Wicked” button, or you can go straight to the ticket sale site on Ticketmaster by calling 800-745-3000 or going online at ticketmaster.com.

There is an overall nine-ticket limit for this event. If you purchase by phone or online, you will be given several delivery options. When time allows, tickets may be delivered by mail.

If you prefer, or if the performance date is near, your tickets will be held in Will Call for pickup at the box office the day of the show. The Will Call window is located at the Gay Street box office. Will Call generally opens one hour prior to the performance unless otherwise stated. In order to pick up tickets at Will Call, you will need to present a valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport) along with the credit card used to purchase the tickets. The Box Office staff will not release tickets if the name on the ID or credit card does not match the name given at the time of purchase. Because lines can be long, it is a good idea to arrive at the box office at least 45 minutes prior to the performance.

Ticketmaster warns there is a delivery delay in place for all hard tickets until Oct. 2. Mobile tickets can be accessed 24 hours prior to show time.

Is ‘Wicked’ kid-friendly?

The “Wicked” website recommends the show for children ages 8 and up. According to BroadwayTour.net, the language in the production is clean and the minimal amount of violence that transpires during the show happens offstage.

It is important to note that Wicked lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes with an intermission, which means it may be too long for restless children. Additionally, the bright lights, loud noises, and flying monkeys may prove to be frightening for some children who have a sensitivity to such these matters.

This year’s season begins Oct. 31 and runs through June 16, 2024, and features “Six the Musical,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Hadestown,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Beetlejuice,” along with “Wicked.”
