Wicomico County's COVID cases up 109.5%; Maryland cases surge 47.5%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Maryland in the week ending Sunday, rising 47.5% as 12,162 cases were reported. The previous week had 8,243 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Maryland ranked 20th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 21.4% from the week before, with 605,127 cases reported. With 1.82% of the country's population, Maryland had 2.01% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 47 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Wicomico County reported 155 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 74 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 20,012 cases and 328 deaths.

Worcester County reported 74 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 26 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,825 cases and 160 deaths.

Somerset County reported 33 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 12 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,266 cases and 74 deaths.

To compare, one month ago, these were numbers for Maryland and Wicomico County: New coronavirus cases rose 37.6% for the week, as 4,129 cases were reported. Wicomico County reported 26 cases and zero deaths in that latest week.

Sussex County reported 607 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 435 cases and seven deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 63,138 cases and 857 deaths.

Accomack County reported 47 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 23 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 7,054 cases and 106 deaths.

Northampton County reported 11 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported six cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,183 cases and 65 deaths.

Within Maryland, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Montgomery County with 300 cases per 100,000 per week; Baltimore City County with 292; and Howard County with 232. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Montgomery County, with 3,153 cases; Baltimore City County, with 1,733 cases; and Baltimore County, with 1,568. Weekly case counts rose in 23 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Montgomery, Baltimore City and Baltimore counties.

Maryland ranked 11th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 86.5% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.7%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Wednesday, Maryland reported administering another 71,359 vaccine doses, including 9,126 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 66,104 vaccine doses, including 7,355 first doses. In all, Maryland reported it has administered 12,078,243 total doses.

In Maryland, 34 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 30 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,051,938 people in Maryland have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 14,520 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 82,468,606 people have tested positive and 999,602 people have died.

Maryland's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, May 15.

Hospitals in 45 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 29 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 41 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
