Widespread Comcast TV and internet outages reported in Cape Coral, Fort Myers areas

Update: A Comcast spokesperson reported that service was beginning to come back up on in affected areas throughout Lee County around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Comcast customers in the Cape Coral and Fort Myers areas are experiencing a widespread outage of Wi-Fi, cable television and other services Wednesday afternoon.

The outage was caused when two fiber lines were severed.

Mindy Kramer, Comcast's vice president, public relations for the Florida region, did not have an estimate of the number of customers impacted, but she said "based on the capacity of the fiber lines that were cut, it is having a significant impact on our services in this area."

One of the lines was cut by an emergency services vehicle and the other was taken down at the poll, "both unfortunate accidents causing the outage," Kramer said in an email. One cut was at South Tamiami Trail and Pelican Landing Parkway sometime around 11 a.m. Wednesday. The other was along Pine Island Road in Cape Coral.

She did not have an estimated time for restoration. "Our fiber teams have been hard at work prepping the new lines so we can get services up and running," she said around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.
