UPDATE: Verizon says 'majority of service' restored in Evansville area
UPDATE on FRIDAY, JUNE 30 at 9:44 a.m.: A Verizon spokesman tells the Courier & Press "the majority of service has been restored, and our teams are continuing to work on site to completely restore service."
PREVIOUSLY: If you're experiencing difficulty making or receiving calls on your Verizon cellphone, it's because of an outage in the Evansville area Thursday afternoon.
A Verizon spokesman tells the Courier & Press that cut fiber lines are "causing a disruption for customers in and around the area."
"Our engineers are working with our third-party fiber provider to get those cuts fixed and service restored," the Verizon spokesman said, noting that the company did not have an estimated service restoration time.
Text messaging and Internet-browsing capabilities seemed to be working normally.
The outage seemed to start between 1 and 2 p.m. Central time, according to the Down Detector website.
The Verizon spokesman noted a couple of other details:
If the user is connected to wifi, they can use wifi to make and receive calls until service is restored.
Even with service interrupted, calls 911 will still go through "as long as any signal from any carrier is available."
