Wife and friends rush to help doctor as he dies on hike up New Mexico mountain, cops say

A doctor’s wife and friends rushed to save him as he died while hiking New Mexico’s highest mountain peak, deputies said.

Renwick Guyer, 61, of Marana, Arizona, was hiking Wheeler Peak on Sunday, Aug. 13, according to a news release from the Taos County Sheriff’s Office.

Guyer then collapsed and fell off the trail, deputies said.

His wife and friends, also doctors, performed CPR on him, but he died on the mountain, deputies said.

Rescuers couldn’t recover his body until the next day because of lightning and other weather conditions.

A coroner will determine his cause of death.

Wheeler Peak is 13,161 feet high. Hikers can take two trails to the summit, including a 16-mile roundtrip hike or a 7-mile hike, according to SummitPost.org.

Wheeler Peak is about 155 miles northeast of Albuquerque.
