Wife refuses to attend family dinner because of mother-in-law’s Christmas stocking tradition

A husband is furious at his wife for boycotting his mother’s Christmas dinner.

He asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******? (AITA)” forum for advice. His mom has a tradition of creating custom stockings for all her grandchildren. Then she hangs the stockings near the fireplace.

He has been with his wife for three years and considers her son from a previous marriage his stepson. But his mom “does not feel comfortable yet” creating a stocking for him.

“My wife refused to drop it and chose it as a hill to die on and even told me she would not be attending Christmas party if mom doesn’t do it,” he wrote.

He said he “blew up” at his wife and told her she couldn’t dictate how his mom decorates.

“She started crying and called me ‘blind’ for not seeing how my family are treating my stepson,” he wrote. “She said she wouldn’t go then and I called her ridiculous for deciding not to go over something so trivial.”

Now his wife refuses to speak to him, and he isn’t sure what to do.

“Go apologize to your wife,” a user suggested.

“Your mother is singling out a child from a Christmas tradition that your family has,” another wrote.

“Your poor step child and wife. Clearly they are not family,” someone commented.
