Wilbur Berkey Classic held at Smithville

SMITHVILLE − The 44th annual Wilbur Berkey Classic was played Thursday at the Berkey Fieldhouse.

The All-Star Classic stands as a tribute to Berkey, who was a coach, teacher, administrator and person who symbolized the true mission of high school athletics. The classic showcases All-Star senior girls and boys from schools throughout Wayne County.

Participating on the girls home team were Emily Tyler, Ella Robinson, Haley Dull and Emma Berkihiser from Rittman; Marissa Heldenbrand, Grace Ward and Emily McGovern from Hillsdale; and Dalton players Ella Lunsford, Caroline Chubbuck, Kylee Johnson, Sarah Witmer and Maddy West. They were coached by Katie Miller.

The away team consisted of Jewel Persinger and Sydney Reber from Waynedale; Annabel Stanley and Gabby Dovala from Norwayne; Averi Haley and Annie Ayers from Orrville; and Wooster players Nora Levy and Elly Badertscher.  They were coached by Alex Kacere and Maggie Summers.

This year the girls away team won 77-59 over the home team. Ella Lunsford and Averi Haley were selected as MVPs.

The boys home team defeated the away team 87-72. Members of the home team were Carter Piatt, Reece Riggenbach and Mac Butzer from Smithville; Justin Rupp and Ethan Hann from Norwayne; Jax Rogers and Prestyn Smith from Hillsdale; and Wooster players Caleb Scott, Tyler Bonner, and Bronson Morgan. Brian West and Josh Hanzie coached the home team.

Justin Greenfelder coached the away team, which consisted of Dalton players Jack Steiner, Quentin Lehman, Braden Fiesler and Ethan Stutz; Brett Alberts and Gavin Phillips from Northwestern; Caleb Gasser, Logan Toler, Ethan Douglas, Owen Riggenbach and Nick Tsimpiris from Chippewa; Jaxon Hackett from Triway; Brant Besancon from Orrville; and Thatcher Rohrer from Central Christian.

Jax Rogers and Jack Steiner were chosen MVPs.
