Wildfire destroys over 1,730 acres in south Bolivia

STORY: Firefighters, volunteers, and local government staff have been working together to contain the blazes.

Video released by the Yacuiba municipality, which borders Argentina, also showed helicopters doing water drops on the flames and medical workers helping firefighters who were affected by the smoke.

The wildfires put at risk vegetation and animals such as military macaws, parrots, monkeys and toucans, Yacuiba mayor Carlos Eduardo Bru Cavero said.

Since the beginning of the year, over 2.2 million acres (900,000 hectares) of forest have been destroyed in the Santa Cruz, Tarija and Chuquisaca departments, the Civil Defense authorities reported.
