The Sames Creek Fire, which is burning east of Newport and about five miles northeast of Toledo, was estimated at five to seven acres Wednesday night. The fire has brought level 1 evacuation warnings — meaning "be prepared" — from Sams Creek Road to Pioneer Mountain Loop at Cook Road and all of Cook Road.

"Lincoln County public safety agencies are responding to an active wildfire in the area of Sams Creek Road east of Toledo," the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said in a brief news release.

Highway 20 remains open but the fire is "causing minimal delay to traffic. Use caution," according to TripCheck.com.

Firefighters from the Oregon Department of Forestry said they were working to put the fire out.

"Crews are working hard to get the fire completely lined and plumbed with hose overnight. The district and its partners are responding aggressively to keep the footprint as small as possible," the state agency said in a news release.

ODF said firefighting resources on-scene included multiple hand crews and engines, a type 2 helicopter, and multiple engines and tenders from local fire departments and neighboring industrial forest landowners.

"Once lined and plumbed, the district will remain in the area for the next several days doing mop-up operations and making sure the fire doesn’t re-emerge due to weather conditions," ODF said.
