Wildfire near Highway 58 grows to more than 100 acres overnight

A wildfire that started burning Sunday in eastern San Luis Obispo County grew about 10 acres overnight,according to Cal Fire.

As of 8:47 a.m. Monday, the Shell Fire had burned more than 100 acres of land at Shell Creek and Highway 58 east of Creston, the agency said.

The fire was 60% contained, Cal Fire said.

More than 20 fire engines were on the scene Monday morning battling the blaze, according to Pulsepoint.

There were no injuries or damages to surrounding structures as of Monday morning, Cal Fire said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Wildfire near Highway 58 has potential to reach 300 acres

Reports of the Shell Fire first came in around 11:55 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Pulsepoint.

Cal Fire reached the area, which is known for spectacular displays of wildflowers in the spring, shortly after noon.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the fire had burned 60 acres of land, according to Cal Fire.

Around 2:06 p.m. Cal Fire reported that the wildfire, which first started in grass and then moved into brush, had the potential to burn 300 acres of land.



Authorities closed Highway 58 between La Panza Road and Shell Creek Road just after 2 p.m Sunday due to the fire. Drivers were diverted to Highway 46, resulting in heavy traffic on northbound Highway 101 in Paso Robles. The highway had reopened as of Monday morning.

As of Sunday evening. Cal Fire had reported that forward progression of the fire had been stopped. However, burning continued late into the night and early Monday morning.
