Wildfire Smoke Shrouds Sun on French Beach Amid Soaring Temperatures

Smoke from wildfires burning in southwest France shrouded the sun in a hazy glow as beachgoers went to soak up rays in Mimizan, France, on July 14.

Footage posted to Twitter shows the effects of smoke as seen from Remember, a beach near La Teste-de-Buch, in the Gironde region, where wildfires prompted authorities to issue a red alert on Thursday.

The local government said on July 15 that 7,300 hectares, or about 18,000 acres, had burned, and more than 10,000 people were evacuated. The Directorate General for Civil Security and Crisis Management said more than 1,000 firefighters were working to fight the blazes.

The fires burned as residents across many parts of the country were warned to be on alert due to a heat wave, with temperatures reaching as high as 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) in some areas. Credit: @nathach4094 via Storyful
