Wildfires in Bolivia scorch protected forests
Wildfires in the Santa Cruz department in southern Bolivia have reached the Nembi Guasu conservation area, Otuquis national park, and the indigenous territories of Pantanal and Santa Teresita.
According to the Center for Legal Studies And Social Research, up to with 40,000 hectares of the Ñembi Guasu area was affected by forest fires. That area belongs to the indigenous government of Charagua Iyambae.
The fires have left dozens of animals injured and intoxicated, and they have been rescued and transferred to a shelter in the small town of Roboré in southeastern Bolivia.
Fauna such as ocelots, tortoises, peccaries, armadillos, and various species of birds have died intoxicated by carbon monoxide.
