Wildfires Destroy Campsites at Europe's Tallest Sand Dune

Five campsites near Dune du Pilat, the tallest dune in Europe, were destroyed on July 19, after wildfires ravaged southwest France, according to officials in Gironde.

The Dune du Pilat is a famous attraction on France’s west coast. The nearby forest offers shade making it a tourism hotspot for campers and holiday makers during the summer.

Footage filmed by Twitter user Eva Fonteneau shows burnt camps and trees as police, fire fighters, and a camera crew survey the damage to the area.

Local news said the five campsites were “90% destroyed” by the flames. No deaths or casualties were reported.
