Wildfires rage near Machu Picchu archaeological site

STORY: Footage showed forest brigades fighting the fire which, according to officials, has been difficult to control due to the inaccessibility of the area and the strong winds

Machu Picchu's mayor, Darwin Baca, said they are still assessing how many hectares the fire has consumed so far.

Each brigade member participated in the fire mitigation action, equipped with specific firefighting gear, helmets, gloves, machete, rakes, and backpacks of water.

So far, the wildfire has affected large hectares of scrubland, putting the Llamacancha archaeological site in jeopardy.
