Willard's Dawson, S.C.'s Blair named NW district first team

Mar. 8—FINDLAY — After leading Willard to an outright league championship and a tournament win, the accolades continue to come in for Max Dawson.

The junior guard was selected to the Northwest District first team in Division II by a 10-person panel from the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

Dawson averaged 25.3 points per game this season for the Crimson Flashes, who finished 15-9 overall and 9-1 in the SBC Bay Division.

Dawson was 220-of-436 (51 percent) from the field this season, including 152-of-261 (58 percent) on two-point shots and 68-of-175 (39 percent) on three-pointers. He was also 96-of-120 (80 percent) from the free-throw line.

With 606 points this season, Dawson as the third-most points in a single-season in Willard history behind only Jimmy Langhurst (807, 2006) and Nick Dials (676, 2003). The point total is also the most points scored in a season by a junior at Willard, while the 25.3 average is the sixth-best in program history.

Dawson is at 1,216 career points, which is also the third-most points through three seasons behind Dials (1,488) and Langhurst (1,393). In career scoring, Dawson is fifth all-time behind Langhurst (2,199), Dials (2,180), Nolan Robinson (1,644) and Mike Buurma (1,468).

Also in Div. II, Willard head coach Joe Bedingfield shared Coach of the Year honors with Rossford's Brian Vorst.

In his sixth season, Bedingfield helped the Flashes navigate a difficult schedule with a short rotation after losing senior starter Carson Wiers to an injury prior to the season.

Willard had wins over Margaretta (14-10), Huron (19-7), Bellevue (16-7) and Lucas (21-5); and losses to Lexington (20-5), Tiffin Columbian (18-5), Sandusky (24-1), Shelby (20-4), Carey (19-4), Toledo St. Francis (14-10) and Russia (23-3).

The Flashes have won four Bay titles in six seasons under Bedingfield, along with a Div. III district title in 2019. Willard is 97-50 overall (.659) in his tenure.

Also in Div. II, Willard's Cam Robinson (15.8 points, 5.3 rebounds) along with Norwalk senior Braedyn Demuth (14.8 points) and sophomore Ben Rothhaar (10.3 points, 9.4 rebounds) were each honorable mention selections.

Western Reserve senior Chris Buchanan was a third team selection in Div. III.

Buchanan helped Western to eight straight victories and a 14-win season. He averaged 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Roughriders (14-8, 9-5), who also won at least one tournament game for a 19th time in the past 21 seasons.

His teammate, junior Grant Bethard (10.3 points, 5.0 rebounds) and Edison's Kayden Bourget (13.7 points, 5.2 rebounds) were honorable mention selections.

After earning Firelands Conference Player of the Year honors, South Central senior Isaac Blair was also a first team selection in Div. IV.

His 475 points this season are the eighth-most in a season at South Central. Blair nearly scored 1,000 points over his final two seasons of high school, as he totaled 905 points in that time.

At 1,083 points, Blair finished seventh all-time in program history in career points.

Monroeville senior Jimmy Clingman earned second team in the district. He averaged 16.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Eagles this season.

Clingman unofficially finished with 1,089 points, which is good for second all-time in career points at the school behind his teammate from a year ago, Isaac Roeder.
