UPDATE: Juvenile in custody after reports of weapon on William Byrd campus

UPDATE: 11:16 A.M. ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke County police say a juvenile is now in custody after an investigation at the William Byrd campus on Feb. 29.

Roanoke County school officials told WFXR that students alerted school administration and resource officers that a weapon was allegedly on campus inside a vehicle. This prompted Roanoke County officers to respond to the campus and conduct an investigation.

During the investigation, police secured the vehicle and determined that there was no threat directed at the campus.

“We commend the students who reported this to school administration and the SRO. We also thank the Roanoke County Police Department for their rapid response. We remind students and parents to report any concerns to school administration or the police,” said Lionberger in a statement.

Roanoke County police say charges are pending.

The incident remains under investigation.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The William Byrd campus is currently secured as police conduct an investigation.

School officials told WFXR News that the Roanoke County Police Department is at the High School. As a precaution, the William Byrd High School and Middle School have been placed on restricted access.

Chuck Lionberger with the Roanoke County Public Schools says students and staff are safe and classes have not been impacted. School officials are asking parents to not come to the school at this time.
