Prince William and Kate Middleton have been caught up in dangerous thunderstorms on their flight back to Islamabad, Pakistan. As part of their five-day tour, the couple visited the country's cultural hub, Lahore, today, and were on their way back to the capital city when the storms struck.

The plane made two failed landings in Islamabad, before having to make the one-hour journey back to Lahore for safety reasons.

The Daily Mail's royal correspondent, Rebecca English, who was on the plane with the royals, tweeted about the ordeal.

"Mid-air drama as the RAF Voyager carrying the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had to abandon its landing in Islamabad and return to Lahore due to terrible storms," she posted on the social network.

The RAF Voyager is the same plane that flew William and Kate over to Pakistan from London, along with their entourage and the pack of journalists accompanying them on the trip.

"The pilot tried to land twice, at two different airports, amid horrendous lightening and turbulence, but was forced to return Lahore for safety reasons," Rebecca continued.

In a later post she uploaded a video of the view from the plane window, showing multiple flashes of lightning in the dark skies. Not terrifying at all...

Thankfully, it doesn't seem as though the royal couple was too spooked by the unfortunate weather. The royal expert tweeted that William came down the plane to see if everyone was alright, before making jokes that he was flying the aircraft. Prince William previously flew an air ambulance for work, and was an RAF pilot before that.

Illustrating just how bad the weather was, Rebecca English posted: "Few of us have experienced turbulence as bad as that - and it’s fair to say there were are a few [sick] faces on the flight."

Tomorrow is the last day of Prince William and Kate Middleton's Pakistan tour, and while we don't know exactly what plans have been disrupted due to their failure to land in Islamabad - specific plans are being kept top secret for security reasons - it's clear the itinerary has been affected.

"At the moment we have no idea if and when we will be able to return," the royal corresponded wrote on Twitter.

Fingers crossed the Duke and Duchess - along with everyone else - can safely make it back to Islamabad in time for their final day of engagements.
