Mar. 12—Organizers of Steel City Con, the largest pop culture gathering at the Monroeville Convention Center, have announced a new special guest headliner.

Hollywood icon William Shatner is scheduled to attend the first two days of the convention set for June 11-13.

The Emmy award-winning Canadian-born actor, writer, producer/director is best known for his portrayal of Capt. James T. Kirk of the starship USS Enterprise on the original "Star Trek" series and movies.

Shatner, who will turn 90 on March 22, also starred in "Boston Legal," "Airplane II: The Sequel," "National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon I," and supporting roles in countless projects including "DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story" just to name a few highlights of his 50-plus years in front of the camera.

"He wanted to come," said Robert Stein, co-owner of Steel City Con. "We are still working through the other guests."

There is a limited number of VIP packages and photo ops for Shatner, who lends his appeal to an already star-studded lineup.

Other guests include include Jon Bernthal ("The Walking Dead," Marvel's "Punisher"); Matt Lillard ("Scooby Doo," "Thirteen Ghosts"); "M*A*S*H" stars Loretta Swit and Jamie Farr; horror film legend Robert Englund ("Nightmare on Elm Street" series); "Revenge of the Nerds" stars Robert Carradine, Curtis Armstrong and Donald Gibb; former Minnesota governor and WWE Hall of Famer Jesse "The Body" Ventura; and puppet master David Barclay (Yoda and Jabba the Hutt from "Star Wars").

Card is subject to change.

Steel City Con was previously scheduled for December and postponed again in April due to covid restrictions.

Organizers are hopeful capacity restrictions will be loosened in the months ahead.

Previously purchased tickets will be honored in June or at any show later this year.

"We thank our fans, vendors and celebrities for their patience and flexibility," Stein said. "It's been a long road and (we) are looking forward to returning soon. It's important to support all small businesses that depend on the 'con' on happening, not only the vendors but all the local restaurants, etc."

Patrons and participants will be required to wear masks and social distance when possible.
