Williams: My quads may be sore, but we gave it our best against Lincoln volleyball

Editors note: One of the title cards in the video says "5 v. 5 scrimmage" and should say "6 v. 6 scrimmage".

When will I learn that I can't move the same way I did when I was a teenager? Probably never.

After a four-month hiatus, I am back, putting my body and health on the line to take on some of the top talent in the Big Bend. Last spring I got smoked on the track and owned in beach volleyball, so why not kick this sports season off on the indoor volleyball court, a sport that I've only found success in during freshman year gym class?

I'm not by myself this time around as photojournalist Alicia Devine will be joining me in the action, however, it's definitely not the same case when it comes to experience in the game. Devine was on the varsity squad for a few years at Edgewater High School in Orlando and played for Daytona State.

She's no stranger to the game, and despite having her son Max only five months ago, she was still a force to reckon with on the outside. She definitely surprised the Lincoln players and coaches, seeing her as a viable attacking option.

Jack vs. series

Leon Beach Volleyball: Williams: Top Gun makes beach volleyball look easy, Leon's Beckham, Somerset showed me it's not

Lincoln Track and Field: Williams: I realized that I wasn't 15 anymore when I went up against Lincoln track and field

On the other side of the net, I was thrown on defense, Alicia's choice, and performed a lot better than I expected. I miserably failed at beach volleyball but actually held my own on the hardwood. Were my quads extremely sore for a few days after? Yes, BUT I did my job as a defender very averagely.

You can tell in the video I was getting in the way of junior libero Lauren Taylor Lozano, but she got me back in the end, asking me for a high five but then dabbing instead, off camera.

Interactions like that were the biggest reason why we chose Lincoln. Not only had this team been extremely successful, sitting at 15-7, but are having a fun time doing it. The energy, excitement, and just overall good time the Trojans have on a daily basis is something that we wanted to be a part of for a bit after watching it this entire season.

Thank you to head coach Taylor Zornes and assistant coach Leroy Irvin for allowing us to crash practice and setting up the drills and scrimmage. Shoutout to our three "co-hosts" seniors Dyani Steward, Alayna Montague, and Skyla Sutherland for showing us the ropes and what to expect.

Lincoln heads into district play next week starting Oct. 18 in 5A-1 district semifinals as they take on the winner of Rickards/Belleview at Lincoln.

Lastly, if any Big Bend athletes are up to the challenge of taking on me, or basically showing me up, feel free to reach out over email at jwilliams@tallahassee.com, on Twitter @jackgwilliams or on Instagram @tlhbigbendpreps.
