Linesmen and other power crews were marshaling at the old Kmart store parking lot in Wilmington Wednesday as the region prepares for the arrival of Tropical Storm Idalia.

The eye of Tropical Storm Idalia had largely moved through Southeastern North Carolina by Thursday morning, spinning offshore as it paralleled the coast and headed eastward out to sea, but the storm had left its impact across the region.

Along with flooded roads and some downed trees and other vegetation, power outages were sprinkled throughout the Wilmington area as the sun rose.

With rainfall amounts of more than 8 inches inland near Interstate 95 and more precipitation forecast before Idalia's trailing bands completely left Southeastern North Carolina, the weather service warned there is the potential for Idalia to bring down large limbs and trees, causing additional power outages along with flash flooding.

According to Poweroutage.us, there were nearly 9,000 customers without power in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties as of 8 a.m. Thursday. But by mid-afternoon, that number had fallen to under 50.
