How some Wilmington-area schools will celebrate Read Across America Week

Read Across America Week is set for March 2-6, beginning on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss.

Schools in the Wilmington area will observe Read Across America Week from Feb. 27-March 3 with different activities and themes.

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebration

WRAAP (Wilmington's Residential Adolescent Achievement Place), University of North Carolina Wilmington's Watson College of Education, and Freedom's Way Ministries are coming together to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. The event will be held 3:30-5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 at Freedom's Way Ministries, 1952 Dawson St., Wilmington.

WRAAP participants will engage in series of fun filled learning activities such as a cooking station — Green Eggs and Ham, read aloud activities, birthday cake celebration, as well as a surprise visit by Dr. Seuss.

WRAAP is an award winning nonprofit youth organization, whose mission is to bridge the educational and social gaps that exist amongst youths, children and families. To learn more visit www.nc-wraap.com.

New Hanover

New Hanover County Schools for Read Across America week, will have invited guest readers to read at various schools.

One of the schools, College Park Elementary, also has theme days starting Monday, Feb. 27 that go alongside famous Dr. Seuss books.

On Monday, it's Cat in the Hat Day, where students can wear a silly hat. On Tuesday, Fox in the socks day (wear silly socks); Wacky Wednesday (wear wacky clothes); Oh the Places You'll Go on Thursday (dress as your future career) and Grinch Friday (wear green).

Brunswick County

Lincoln Elementary School

Lincoln Elementary in Leland will observed Read Across America week, Feb. 27-March 3.

The students at Lincoln Elementary School in Leland can dress up daily with a book theme from Feb. 27-March 3. There also will be over 40 guest readers from the community to read to all classes at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 2. Each grade level has a different author and the guests will select a book to read.

Monday - Dress in your favorite color and read a book about colors.

Tuesday - Wear your pajamas and read a book about sleeping.

Wednesday - Wear a silly outfit and read a silly book.

Thursday - Dress as a famous person and read a book about them.

Friday - Dress as a character from one of your favorite books.

Union Elementary

Union Elementary will celebrate reading via Spirit Week from Feb. 27-March 3.

Monday - Hats off to reading. Wear your favorite hat.

Tuesday - Readers become great leaders. Dress for success.

Wednesday - Score big with reading. Wear your favorite team shirt.

Thursday - Happy birthday Dr. Seuss. Dress as a book character.

Friday - Cuddle up with a book. Wear your pjs.

Bolivia Elementary

For Read Across America week, Bolivia Elementary will have guest readers on Friday, March 3. Guest readers will be from in-house staff and members of the fire department, police and a local pastor.

Belville Elementary

The school will also have themes throughout the week.

Monday - Dress in your favorite color, and read a book about color.

Tuesday - Wear your pajamas. Read a book about sleeping.

Wednesday - Wear a silly outfit. Read a silly book.

Thursday - Dress as a famous person and read about them.

Friday - Book character parade day. Dress as a character from one of your favorite books.

Pender

North Topsail Elementary School will observe Read Across America week from Feb. 27-March 3.

Monday - Hats off to Dr. Seuss. Wear hats.

Tuesday - Cat in the Hat. Wear red/white.

Wednesday - Green Eggs and Ham. Wear green.

Thursday - Dress as your favorite book character. It does not have to be a Dr. Seuss character.

Friday - Oh, the Places You'll Go! Dress for an adventure or your future.
