Some Wilmington residents will soon have to find a new license plate agency.

The Division of Motor Vehicles office at 13 S. Kerr Ave. In the Market Plaza Shopping Center is permanently closing at 5 p.m. today (Sept. 22).

That’s because the contract for the current operator, Charles Garrett, is ending, according to a news release from the N.C. Department of Transportation. Garrett’s been operating the agency since 2003.

The agency is seeking applicants for a commissioned contractor to undertake the facility’s operations. Applications must be submitted to the NCDMV no later than Oct. 20.

Even though the DMV oversees the 128 license plate agencies in North Carolina, the agencies are managed by private businesses or local governments, so finding a new operator is crucial to keeping the facility running, the news release said.

The agencies provide “vehicle registration, title transactions, license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations,” the news release said.

Wilmington drivers can visit one of these two nearby license plate agencies for service Monday through Friday:

  • Wilmington, 2390 Carolina Beach Road, Suite 108., from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 910-763-7076

  • Bolivia, 30 Government Drive N.E., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., 910-253-2712
