Police are investigating an alleged attempted bank robbery in Wilmington.

A 30-year-old man was taken into custody midday Wednesday in connection with an attempted robbery of a Wilmington bank.

According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to reports of a robbery at the Wells Fargo on South College Road shortly after 9 a.m. Police said the suspect passed a note to an employee at the bank before eventually leaving on foot.

After an hours-long search, the suspect, Eliot Watkins, was taken into custody around noon Wednesday.

Watkins was identified by an on-duty, plain-clothes officer at a business in the 5100 block of Market Street, authorities said.

"Anytime that a business is victimized it is very concerning to us as a police agency,” Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams said in the release. “But when it comes to an individual committing a bank robbery, that is a situation that really garners the attention of law enforcement."

Williams added the persistence of officers led to the capture, and commended his officers and those in partner agencies for their efforts.
