Wilson County Schools highest one-week total of student COVID-19 cases reported

Wilson County Schools reported 378 students who tested positive for COVID-19 from Jan. 8-14, the most the district has reported in a week this school year.

The previous high was 369 the week of Aug. 21-27, according to the district's COVID-19 dashboard. The district closed schools from Monday, Aug. 30 through the Labor Day holiday during the fall semester.

Wilson County had 45 students and seven staff members test positive for COVID-19 the final full week of the fall semester, Dec. 11-17, according to the district’s dashboard.

Wilson County Schools brought back temperature checks upon arrival to school when the spring semester began on Jan. 4, as the coronavirus began to spike again with the omicron variant spiking.

"To know where we are, I don't think that is a surprise to anyone," Wilson County Public Information Officer Bart Barker said.

At this point there aren't plans for any school closures, but district administrators are monitoring the spread of the virus "very closely," Barker said.

The district has had several snow days in the last couple of weeks that have provided unscheduled breaks.

The Lebanon Special School District closed Jan. 5-7 because of an increase in COVID-19 cases with a projected number of teachers and staff out to be an insurmountable number.

Wilson County Schools also reported 57 positive cases of COVID-19 the week of Jan. 8-14 among staff members.
