Wimbledon primary school crash: Police officer visibly moved as she announces girl, 8, has died

Watch: Police officer announces death of eight-year-old girl

A police officer was visibly emotional as she announced that an eight-year-old girl had died when a car crashed into a girls' prep school in Wimbledon, south London.

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland's voice broke as she said: "Very sadly one of the children, an eight-year-old girl, died at the scene.

Continuing to speak, she said the thoughts of the police were with her family after the "tragic incident".

She added: "This is a very difficult time for everyone at the school and across the wider community."

Chief Supt Kelland was speaking at a press conference alongside London Ambulance Service chief paramedic Dr John Martin.

Dr Martin said they received a call just before 10am about a Land Rover crashing into The Study Preparatory School in Camp Road, Wimbledon, south-west London.

The vehicle appeared to have gone through a fence and careered across a field, then into a school building.

Pictures from the scene show the gold and black Land Rover by the outside of the building, with rubble on the ground and play equipment, including a plastic toy chair, nearby.

Paramedics plus an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene – landing on one of the playing fields – and the injured victims were treated.

Dr Martin said a total of 16 patients were treated at the scene and 10 were taken to hospital after the incident.

Police said a woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The force said the incident is not being treated as terror-related.
