In their win against Kansas, a few Sooners were worthy of game balls

Let’s not beat around the bush. The Sooners don’t deserve for anyone to be getting any significant type of praise after the way they performed in Lawrence, Kansas.

Oklahoma looked unprepared, disinterested, and otherwise unbothered to play with any fire in the first half against Kansas. One can only imagine how that locker room was at halftime.

However, in the second half, the Sooners showed life. Overall, a few notable performances stood out from the rest of the pack, even though the team as a whole was underwhelming.

Here are this week’s game ball recipients.

Caleb Williams, QB

It’s becoming evident that Caleb Williams has something special about him. He’s shown that in the Texas game, and he gave the world a full game of that against TCU.

Against Kansas, Williams did whatever was necessary to get a win — even going as far as to take the ball from a stopped Kennedy Brooks and rumble forward for a critical conversion in the fourth quarter.

He had a very poor interception on an underthrown 50/50 ball, but he played composed despite the fact the Sooners as a whole looked lifeless most of the game.

Up Next: A Wide Receiver and Defensive Back Starred for the Sooners

Trevon West, WR

Trevon West has been a depth guy for the wide receiver room up until a few weeks ago. At one point, West entered his name into the transfer portal only to come back to OU and fight hard for playing time.

He’s seen himself on the field a bit more over the last few weeks due to injuries to other receivers. He made a big 35-yard catch against TCU and this week had a big-time 66 yard run on a reverse against Kansas, which set up Caleb Williams’ touchdown pass to Jadon Haselwood.

West has answered the call the last few weeks, and while Mario Williams, Mike Woods, and Theo Wease remain injured, Oklahoma will need guys like West to keep making plays when their name is called.

Key Lawrence, S

Key Lawrence is soaring right now. The Sooners’ defensive effort was a huge stain for a unit that needed a bounceback game against a lesser opponent.

However, Lawrence was a bright spot for an otherwise dismal performance. Against the Jayhawks, Lawrence posted eight total tackles, two of which went for losses, and he forced a fumble.

The transfer from Tennessee is finally acclimating himself, and the results look excellent. Lawrence is just a different type of athlete than anyone else the Sooners play in the secondary.

Delarrin Turner-Yell’s injury is unfortunate, but it’s opened the door for Lawrence to get the reps he needs to blossom. As of right now, that particular safety position is fine until Turner-Yell comes back.

Again, the Oklahoma team looked largely uninspiring, but these three guys showed up today and played their tails off, and that is a commendable effort. The Sooners will have the week to review and put this game behind them. A home game against Texas Tech looms, and the Sooners will need these guys plus many more bounceback performances to wash away the stink of their performance versus Kansas.
